In regards to writing, I’ve tried it at all hours of the day, and I mean that quite literally when the line between being awake until 3:00 AM is entirely different from being awake at 3:00 AM. Name the time and I’ve written during it sun or moon, light or darkness. There’s one conclusion I’ve come to amidst this. The best time is the early morning time. And here I am, writing right now. The light, the quiet, the liminal feeling between night and day โ itโs atmospheric. Writers are sensitive to atmosphere. Dawn feels like a story beginning. And it is, my own, and for whatever I’m writing, for the characters, the plot, etc.

Here I am, crafting rhymes in the quiet before the daylight breaks. I imagine with clarity in this dream-adjacent state where ideas and words entwine together, and the canto, now fleshed with stems and leaves, is being readied to bloom.

That’s right; all too well known, 5:00 AM works just right. Once upon a time, it was the rigor of champions. Little did I know it’d be my second nature as a novelist. This time is before the birds, but I’m not showing up as a bird does to catch breakfast. No, I’m in fact making the feast that is the canto or chapter, whether rhyme or prose, albeit usually the first. The cook-up to be enjoyed later on for edits and proofreading later that day.
When it’s dark, before everyone is awake, my mind is clearest, and the words flow like honey. Things are quieter, distractions fewer, and the doorway into the imagination is wide open and still connecting me with the dreams of before. It’s a dream-adjacent state, and the science proves it. Creativity, intuition, and looser, more imaginative thinking happen naturally. The logical, critical thinking that can hinder the free flow of ideas hasn’t booted up yet, unlike my computer which is taking my keyboard input and making them into a story.

Demands at this time are at a level of zero, meaning no texts, no emails, no household noise, no social expectations. Just the quietude, which I can’t emphasize the sweetnesss of enough. The world isn’t asking me for anything and nor am I of it. No demands for silence waste my energy and clog my thoughts. Mental quiet is gold. Writing when everyone else is asleep has its own psychological magic, since its a secret pocket of the day with bonus hours that belong only to me. The writing feels so much more intentional knowing that I’ll get that daily feel of accomplishment before breakfast. The writing colors the rest of the day with creative energy since no procrastination happens when I start writing from the get-go of awakeness all while enjoying the quiet, liminal time before dawn that’s so atmospheric. As a writer, I’m sensitive to this atmosphere like the dawn of beginning a new story, chapter, or whatever.
